Holistic Dentistry FAQs
Answered by Dr. Villarreal

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Dr. David Villarreal, holistic dentist at BioDental Healing, has been practicing in the heart of Newbury Park, CA for several years. Over the years, he has noticed people ask him a lot of questions relating to the stark differences that separate a regular, everyday dentist over a biological or holistic dentist.

Our Mission

We believe our job is to help you achieve your best physical, dental and emotional health as safely as possible and in as short a time period as possible. We offer conscious sedation and auxiliary treatments as part of our protocol to help achieve your optimal health.

The Holistic Approach to Dentistry – Difference Between Holistic and Regular?

The main differences of holistic dentistry from your traditional dentist are all in the approach. Holistic dentists believe that oral health is connected to your overall health. Because of this holistic dentists will opt NOT to use materials that are known to cause issues (i.e. amalgam) & instead provide only treatment options that work to benefit not just your oral health, but overall health.

This is accomplished by:

  • Utilizing only biocompatible, non-toxic materials
  • Eliminating infections
  • Promoting optimal health between the jaw, head, teeth, and neck structural relationships

Keep in mind that the goal of any holistic dentist is to identify areas of oral disease and structural dysfunction that may be impacting your overall health, pinpointing the causes, and then treating these issues using holistic methods.

What types of procedures do holistic dentists offer that non-holistic dentists do not?

At BioDental Healing, one of our most popular procedures is the safe removal and replacement of amalgam, silver fillings. However, holistic dentists also offer:

  • Natural dental cleanings that do not involve the use of fluoride
  • Dental fillings that are BPA-free & metal free
  • IV therapy
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Crown replacement using metal-free components
  • Metal-free dental bridges

What materials do you use if you are not using metal?

Holistic dentists avoid the use of metal and instead, use biocompatible materials such as chemically bonded materials (glued) & glass composite resin materials, which resemble our natural tooth color. We make an effort to utilize the best material that is the most hypoallergenic (i.e. causes fewer adverse reactions).

How is mercury bad for you?

Mercury is a known neurotoxin & has been reported on in a number of different studies showing it’s harmful effect on our bodies when consumed in any way (in dental fillings, the microscopic vapors that are released from the filling find their way into the bloodstream).

Here are several articles to become more familiar with mercury and it’s dangers:

What will happen on my first visit with a holistic dentist?

Like other dentists, you will schedule an appointment and be seen at your scheduled appointment time. Most often the first visit will be diagnostic in nature, allowing us to develop the right treatment plan that addresses your needs. We encourage you to bring a copy of your medical records & spend some time detailing out – on paper – a brief timeline of your health issues and major life events. This information will be kept private between you and the dentist.
